"Usable, but bogged down with demos, no PDF" 2009-04-01
By Lonny D. Stark
The program installs reasonably easy, it finds your audio card and MIDI controllers, it handles plugin instruments and effects well enough, but as a matter of taste, I think its interface is somewhat ugly. MIDI tracks aren't particularly intuitive. Loops are handled better. Ins and Outs work well.

I've used Fruity Loops Fruity Edition for about a year, and while I think it's an acceptable product, it is utterly loaded with demo plugins -- which, if inadvertently installed on a track, completely vanish (along with the track's contents!) when that project is saved. Of course, you do get a little warning with no exit strategy as it happens. Don't make the mistake of spending hours creating a track with a demo instrument.

You can blow half a day tracking down and deleting all of the demo plugins and associated files so they don't fill up the program's browser, not to mention your computer's hard drive. Or you can drop a load of cash on ImageLine to buy all of the demos. I got rid of every one, and used a ton of free plugins from .Net magazine and from reputable websites. Don't waste your money.

One of the demos, ToxicBiohazard, is notorious for setting off false virus alerts by many of the most popular antivirus programs. Since it's a demo, you may want to throw it out to avoid the hassle.

Fruity loops doesn't believe in offering an online PDF that you can download, print out, highlight, bookmark, and read at your leisure in a comfy chair or at your local coffee shop. OH NO! They insist on having the entire manual online on their website, as HTML pages. How nice! Don't you just love reading pages and pages of technical documentation via the radiating glow of a computer monitor? It's truly splendid when you're trying to troubleshoot a software problem, forced to hop between windows for answers. In my opinion, the lack of a manual is a "Terminal Error" -- that is, like the old Windows 3 alert, it means a complete failure from which there is no hope of recovery. Hence, the one-star rating.

By Joey Townsend (Charlotte, NC)
I have been a fruity loops user for over 5 years and each iteration gets more impressive and more powerful. As far as a software compay, the previous reviewer was grossly incorrect. I purchased the downloadable version back in the 2003/2004 timeframe with FREE UPDATES for life. I stopped recording music for a few years and recently started up again. I went online, entered my 5 year old key, and was immediately updated to the latest and greatest version. FREE UPDATES FOR LIFE. Now THAT's a Great software company in my opinion. The software is VERY powerful and I use it a a VST instrument to track all my rhythm tracks into Cubase. Works like a champ. Great effects and generators and VERY simple approach to developing patterns and tracking full songs.

By Daniel C. Maynard (Durham, North Carolina)
I bought this software and sent it to my grandson in Virginia. My grandson is unable to activate it, even though he has registered it repeatedly, and even tried changing the password, to no avail. I even drove up to Virginia to try to help him activate it. The problem is not with the distributor, but with the manufacturer. There is no telephone number to contact them and problem resolution is to post something on a message board in hopes of finding someone who has previously encountered this. Fruity Loops is not a reliable software company, in my opinion, and Amazon should drop them as a software choice. It seems I wasted $132.46 of my money. I was interested in getting upgrades but without the product working, forget about it.

Representing the culmination of more than 10 years of sustained development, FL Studio 8 is set to become the most flexible virtual music studio tool in the industry.
Chief Software Architect, Didier Dambrin has realized his vision of creating an open-architecture virtual studio environment where the only constraint on the users is their own imagination. This philosophy is reflected in FL Studio 8s flexible audio and control data routing, free-form Playlist design and interoperability with industry standards (VST/VSTi/VST2, DXi, DXi2, Buzz, ReWire, MIDI, MP3, WAV, OGG). Didier notes We don't try to protect our data & come up with new formats only for marketing reasons. We use existing standards as much as possible, and allow FL Studio to be used as a plugin in other hosts. In version 8, particular emphasis has been given to improved workflow through enhanced interface design, so that ideas can be crystallized and creativity captured.

 "A Great All-In-One" 2008-08-15
By G. Smith (Longmont, Co United States)
FL Studio 8 XXL is a great place for any beginner to start or any pro to expand their studio with. I use it not only for its easy to use sequencing and pattern editor that's easy to understand at a glance, but as a VST host and a flexible signal router. For recording, I use a Linux machine with a Delta 1010 and connect it to my Windows box with an Audiophile 24/96 via the SPDIF connectors. This allows me to route synthesizer outputs through the mixer in FL Studio for effects processing, EQing, compression ect. At the same time, I can use the analog inputs on the audiophile to turn two of FL Studio's mixer channels into signal inserts that I plug into my main mixer. I can't do that with Reason, and even with the academic discount, Cubase is much more expensive.

Image Line has done really well packing FL8 XXL with a lot of features. The Soundgoodizer is a very effective tool in the loudness war and a great way to get a taste for what Maximus can do. I use all of my soundfonts and most of my other samples in Linux, so I don't use the various sample players too much, but the DirectWave player looks fantastic and I'm sure the soundfont player does its job well.

There are a few things that I don't like. Plugin management is tedious and frustrating. I wish the hotkeys were more convenient to use, as having to change between the different tools can slow you down. The included tutorials are decent. The online videos are better, but don't help if you take your laptop around.

All in all, with any of the FL8 packages, it's a great way to get started with computer music. Throw in some free VSTs (say, the CM Studio!), and you've got more music instruments and effects at your disposal than multi million dollar studios had just a decade ago. For the money, it's hard to go wrong with FL Studio 8.
