The program installs reasonably easy, it finds your audio card and MIDI controllers, it handles plugin instruments and effects well enough, but as a matter of taste, I think its interface is somewhat ugly. MIDI tracks aren't particularly intuitive. Loops are handled better. Ins and Outs work well.
I've used Fruity Loops Fruity Edition for about a year, and while I think it's an acceptable product, it is utterly loaded with demo plugins -- which, if inadvertently installed on a track, completely vanish (along with the track's contents!) when that project is saved. Of course, you do get a little warning with no exit strategy as it happens. Don't make the mistake of spending hours creating a track with a demo instrument.
You can blow half a day tracking down and deleting all of the demo plugins and associated files so they don't fill up the program's browser, not to mention your computer's hard drive. Or you can drop a load of cash on ImageLine to buy all of the demos. I got rid of every one, and used a ton of free plugins from .Net magazine and from reputable websites. Don't waste your money.
One of the demos, ToxicBiohazard, is notorious for setting off false virus alerts by many of the most popular antivirus programs. Since it's a demo, you may want to throw it out to avoid the hassle.
Fruity loops doesn't believe in offering an online PDF that you can download, print out, highlight, bookmark, and read at your leisure in a comfy chair or at your local coffee shop. OH NO! They insist on having the entire manual online on their website, as HTML pages. How nice! Don't you just love reading pages and pages of technical documentation via the radiating glow of a computer monitor? It's truly splendid when you're trying to troubleshoot a software problem, forced to hop between windows for answers. In my opinion, the lack of a manual is a "Terminal Error" -- that is, like the old Windows 3 alert, it means a complete failure from which there is no hope of recovery. Hence, the one-star rating.

It's a great product. I love it. Only one problem - takes a long time to learn how to use it

I have been a fruity loops user for over 5 years and each iteration gets more impressive and more powerful. As far as a software compay, the previous reviewer was grossly incorrect. I purchased the downloadable version back in the 2003/2004 timeframe with FREE UPDATES for life. I stopped recording music for a few years and recently started up again. I went online, entered my 5 year old key, and was immediately updated to the latest and greatest version. FREE UPDATES FOR LIFE. Now THAT's a Great software company in my opinion. The software is VERY powerful and I use it a a VST instrument to track all my rhythm tracks into Cubase. Works like a champ. Great effects and generators and VERY simple approach to developing patterns and tracking full songs.

I bought this software and sent it to my grandson in Virginia. My grandson is unable to activate it, even though he has registered it repeatedly, and even tried changing the password, to no avail. I even drove up to Virginia to try to help him activate it. The problem is not with the distributor, but with the manufacturer. There is no telephone number to contact them and problem resolution is to post something on a message board in hopes of finding someone who has previously encountered this. Fruity Loops is not a reliable software company, in my opinion, and Amazon should drop them as a software choice. It seems I wasted $132.46 of my money. I was interested in getting upgrades but without the product working, forget about it.
